Big Word Poetry

Without looking these adjectives up, write a poem using them: desultory, sapid and sui generis. For your setting, your speaker should be walking through a park or enjoying a fine summer day in someway. Use this picture I took in Schenley Park as your inspiration.

Once you have written a whole poem, you may look up the words. See how you can make the words fit, or find new words in your thesaurus to change your poem in some new way. (Also, if you know the words above, find ones you aren't sure of on http://dictionary.reference.com/ in the Word of the Day section).

  1. sui generis-
    with her hair pulled up
    like the soft swinging
catch of tepid air, i have placed
my faith in a desultory world.
    we walk, well..
    i walk,
    but i never find
    the path near the
    sapid lake.

  2. Nice, Billy. I like how all the words fit perfectly. I also like how you've used them in new spaces--bringing new meaning.
