A Sense of Smell

Often a whiff of some by-gone smell can transport our minds to a different time. For some, mulled apple cider and freshly fried donuts remind one of Halloween. The slightly sweet smell of bacon reminds one of childhoods at home or the diner down the street.

Either way, familiar smells can be conduits into our past and into our memories. One smell can trigger a series of moments one hasn't thought of in years.

This Monday, go around smelling everything you come in contact with. By that I mean, take note of the smells. What do they remind you of? What adjectives or verbs really describe the smell of these things? With these notes create a character in a poem who is taken back to another time, perhaps this time is sad, or simple or just different. Remember each portion of this memory with a correlating smell. Write your poem in heroic couplets.
